There are seven steps to becoming a Montessori parent.

Step 1: Enrolling Your Child
The first step in becoming as Montessori parent took place when you enrolled your child in a Montessori program. You need to understand the core philosophy of what Montessori is all about. The most significant Montessori concept is to respect the child. Your child is not a blank slate. Respecting the child is first, to respect the nature of children and their individual personalities. Children are not mini adults waiting to be molded.

Step 2: Train Yourself
The second step is to train yourself to be an observer. What gives them joy, and what are they attracted to? You are fortunate that you have a trained Montessori teacher that spends a lot of time observing your child and with who you can conference with.

Step 3: Become A Champion
Step three is to become your child’s champion. Your child needs a champion and encourage his personality (especially, if it is different than yours.).

Step 4:Practice, Practice, Practice
The fourth step is to practice what they learn at school-grace and courtesy. Please and thank you, may I, excuse me, please forgive me and a host of other considerations practiced and modeled at home. Please respond favorably to a child with great manners.

Step 5: Allow Independence
Fifth, practice independence. Independence is the ability to be self-governing and that comes from making choices, living with the consequences and having responsibilities. Give your child chores they can accomplish to build responsibility, independence and confidence.

Step 6: Give Them Time
Sixth, give them the gift of time. Give them time to accomplish their chores, time to be children, time to breath, and most importantly, give them your time.

Step 7: Practice Humility
Seventh, practice humility. They have a lot to learn from you and we learn from them also. When you are wrong, practice humility by saying, “Please forgive me.” It will teach them one of the great lessons in life-when you fail, whether it’s in a relationship, school, career or life, own the failure and start over again-to succeed another day.
